Most pages have an 'add comments' form at the bottom (not unlike this page, in fact), but if you have general comments about the site, design, content, usability, or anything else, drop me a note here. It's always nice to see people are enjoying my labours (or not).

Secondly, this is a very nice place you have here! The "bytes" section was very informative, and the "show me" thing is neat too. I tried to add a photo to it,but i think my picture attachment needs changing,so i'll try again when i've altered it. I've yet to read the netstory thing, but only because it's late and i'm very tired.

Says: hey, about the netstory, it's great, but it would be a lot better if you could find some way to display what people other than the last person to post have written, because when i added my part, all i could see was sab's part, and after i added my part i saw the first one which was yours, and i got lucky and kept the storyline pretty coherent, but some of the stuff didn't match up between our sections, so this is just a long way of saying: "find a way to display everyone's previous written portions" and also, you should have the most recent ones at the bottom, rather than the top. It makes for a more coherent read

See www.w3.org/TR/turingtest for info about inaccessibility of anti-robot tests
---
from u24:
yes, I'm aware of those issues. Logic tests are easy to circumvent. My suggestion for webmasters is that they offer a way to bypass the CAPTCHA system in case they cannot read the image for whatever reason, and that those bypassed requests are manually reviewed to check for spam.

no, why would they? But they won't be converted into clickable links, so people would have to select the text, copy it, and paste it into their address bar in order to get to them. Also, the captcha prevents people automating a tool to spam me.

i am liking this a lot!
except one little peeve:
i am pretty annoyed (well not pretty but quite annoyed) because your captcha does not tell you if you have cookies disabled. Well, i know i have disabled them, but it doesn't warn you that it requires them and i was wasting a lot of time trying to post here, and it probably wasn't worth it....
actually do all captcha's require cookies?
@kevin:
if you can program, make a program to run in the background and make messages flash up (subliminally, of course) periodically. say it is a game (or other thing she might open without thinking too hard about it, especially if you tell her beforehand) and then make it come up with an error box "Sorry you need Windows NT to run this program" or substiture NT for an OS she doesn't have! Then make it put itself in the startup folder, "run=" line in the win.ini file, install itself in the "Run" key in the registry and then put itself in the windows Shell "command/open" key. This will pretty much guarantees that will stay inside her system! I don't know how to do most of this stuff, but i'm sure you could easily find out with research or u24 might know, maybe? If you can't program, I suggest buying a commercial product, althoguh it may not be legal to subject someone to subliminal messaging without their permission (i know it is stupid, if you have to have their permission, then it is obviously not going to work and anyway you are doing it to help her so you would have at least a foot to stand on if she decides to sue. no i am only kidding!) :)
@u24:
a note on the bookmarklets;
is it possible to edit cookies without using javascript or the browsers internal editor?
in opera, the lock page is not very efficent as on every pop-up box there is a "Stop running scripts on this page" and someone could come along, check that box and easily take your session! just a warning :)!
also does the email-to-image work on addresses that i might put in my comment?
test: bob@hotmail.com !
thank you very much again,
PS: and if you don't mind (i hope you don't!) i am going to test your html/php filter in another, separate message, so feel free as a bird to delete that one (but please don't kill this one!)
---
from u24:
thanks for your comments :-)
My filter uses PHP's strip_tags function, which is pretty reliable ;)
Most CAPTCHA's require cookies. I am planning to update my captcha script at some point, and I'll bear in mind the lack of non-cookie support when I develop it.
The emailImage script doesn't work in the comment body. I'll probably fix that at some point too.
Thanks

thank you for responding to me,
i like your breaking out of frames gag, i think it is very handy to have that, in fact i made an iframe of it just to see the pop-ups! that probably makes me quite sad, but anywho... :)
i see how your contents is always on the left hand of the screen and i looked at your source to try to replicate the idea but i can\'t get it to work with the CSS and div. it is a bit too complicated for me! so i went for a simpler, already prepared for me method, with your adsense layouts. now, i know they are meant to be for ads but i have used them for a table of contents. do you think that is aceptable or not? should i do it another way? also why on the adsense layouts do you need a \'container\' for it? i took it out and it didn\'t work, but why is it nesscary?
thank you much for the php pass script, i find it very useful (along with the captcha) but is it possible to use other hashes other than MD5 with it?
another question, does anyone know why PGP has stoppped the free (and less feature-ful) version of PGP? i am very glad you are still hosting it because PGP isn\'t. Why is gPg better than PGP?
finally, it might to be a good idea to link to the hacker howto at www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html on your security page
regards,
othartley
---
from u24:
you can use the adsense layouts for whatever you like :-) they're really just little idea I had which I haven't developed fully yet.
html/css is sometimes pretty difficult. have a look at w3schools.com, I think they've got some good info about positioning divs using CSS.
PGP are now a commercial company, so they're just trying to make money. IMO, gPg is better because it's open source, which means you can (in theory) tell if there are backdoors/weaknesses etc in the code. In reality there are few people skilled enough to tell that for themselves, but the theory is that someone somewhere would have noticed by now. It's also free and always will be, and it's interoperable with PGP.
You can use any type of hash you like with the password script; that's the beauty of open source :-)
Glad you're enjoying my site
-h.
Who:
When: December 30th, 2007
Says: Bonjour Howard,
I have visited W3schools once or twice and they really do have a vast library of all the tutorials you could think of, everything to do with web development. I am surprised how they get by, I hardly see an ad on their site, just the odd few on the side bar! I have learnt much from W3schools but there is also much more I haven't read, I think it would take a lifetime to read it all (and then you would have any time to write your website!)
So you say gPg is open source, I didn't realise it was, but if it is, that is great! That is definitly a reason for it being better than PGP, but I thought as PGP was always a company (and companies need to make money to stay afloat) it was bound to make you pay for it's products. It is just I thought they would have a freeware version, but they have stopped that. :(
Have you heard of identicons, they are a picture of the commenters IP, but hashed to keep them it secret. It is because I had a random suspicion, in one of my "off Earth dazes" about someone 'stealing' my e-mail, putting it as their name and using it to post nasty comments apparently from me. They wouldn't really steal it, that would involve hacking, it is using without consent but I am sure it will never happen. Identicons eliminate the chance of that happening, more info at:
On the masterful wiki - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identicon
Docuverse article - http://tinyurl.com/36tzhk
Docuverse again - http://tinyurl.com/2jnk8w
Find your identicon! - http://tinyurl.com/2fk2e8
BTW, these tinyurls aren't meant to scare you, or make/redirect you go to some queer site, no trust me, as long as you type them correctly you should be OK! :-D
Scratch the hacker howto from catb.com, I went to fyodor's good reading and they have a link to it from there, so it doesn't really matter whether you put a direct link there or not, as you have technically linked to it anyway, through a gateway. So a determined reader would find it quite easily, it is top of the fyodor list, but I think highly of it, that's all.
On your random web page what does the img=0 after the question mark mean? If it is 0, it redirects me to Google (with the random search) then to the "I'm Feeling Lucky Webpage", but if it is anything else, it just flickers, trying to load vainly and dies like a candle going out! In addition, when I looked at the source, I wasn't expecting to find much, it said (inside script tags) "self.location = self.location;" Now, what the hell is that supposed to do!?
Also, to your knowlegde, is it possible to start a web browser on a web page, but without using parameters?
Together we ae making this guestbook a very, very long guestbook aren't we, shall we move somewhere else, a more quite place such as your collected knowlegde? I don't want to make people to wait twenty minutes to load 200 screenfuls of text, now do I!?
Au revoir, mes amies,
